Case Study: Water Put Into a Diesel Tank at a Tintagel Campsite

Water in Campervan Fuel Tank

Job Reference: 202823

A family holiday in Cornwall nearly came to an abrupt end when a simple misunderstanding resulted in a substantial amount of water being poured into a campervan’s diesel fuel tank.

Fortunately, the mistake was spotted before the vehicle was started, allowing Fuel Fixer to respond quickly and prevent what could have become a major disruption to the family’s trip.

The Incident

While staying at a campsite in Tintagel, the customer stopped at the site’s water disposal area.

As he stepped away to use the campsite facilities, his wife began emptying water from the campervan’s waste container. Unfortunately, she mistakenly poured the water into the vehicle’s diesel fuel tank rather than the appropriate disposal point.

By the time the error was discovered, approximately a quarter of a tank of water had been added to the diesel tank.

Naturally, the couple were extremely concerned about the potential damage this could cause to the vehicle’s fuel system and engine.

The Critical Difference

Fortunately, the customer realised what had happened before starting the engine.

This is one of the most important factors in any water contamination incident. Once contaminated fuel is circulated through injectors, pumps and fuel lines, the risk of expensive damage increases significantly.

Because the campervan had not been started, the contamination remained largely contained within the fuel tank, making recovery much simpler and helping to avoid further complications.

Stranded at the Campsite

Although the vehicle had not been driven, the family were still stranded at the campsite and understandably anxious about whether their holiday plans would be ruined.

Rather than waiting for recovery and transport to a garage, they contacted Fuel Fixer for immediate assistance.

Our team quickly arranged for a specialist fuel technician to attend the campsite the very same day.

The Recovery Process

Fuel technician Bela arrived on-site and carried out a complete fuel system recovery procedure.

The work included:

  • Draining the contaminated fuel tank
  • Removing the water-contaminated diesel
  • Flushing the fuel lines
  • Refilling the system with clean diesel
  • Starting and testing the engine
  • Carrying out final operational checks

To provide additional protection, Fuel Fixer also added a specialist treatment additive designed to continue cleaning and conditioning the fuel system during subsequent vehicle use.

This helps remove any trace contamination that may remain within the system after the initial recovery process.

The Outcome

Thanks to the customer noticing the mistake before starting the engine, the contamination was successfully removed before it could circulate through the vehicle’s fuel system.

Following drainage, flushing and refuelling, the campervan started normally and all systems operated correctly.

The family were able to continue their holiday without the inconvenience, expense or delays that often accompany fuel contamination incidents.

Customer Review

Following the recovery, the customer left a five-star review praising both the office team and attending technician:

“From dealing with the service advisor (Michael) to the fuel technician (Bela) who attended the breakdown, everything went very well and a professional service throughout. The fuel technician Bela was fantastic and very thorough and methodical in all stages of clearing out the bad fuel. I couldn’t recommend Bela and the team highly enough.”

What Happens If Water Gets Into a Diesel Tank?

Water contamination can cause serious problems for modern diesel engines. Water reduces lubrication within the fuel system, increases the risk of corrosion and can damage high-pressure fuel pumps and injectors if circulated through the vehicle.

The good news is that if the contamination is discovered before the engine is started, specialist drainage and flushing procedures can often resolve the issue quickly and prevent further damage.
