Wrong Fuel RangeRover Sport

A common call out for us is to owners of range rover sport diesels that have been filld with the wrong fuel, ie petrol in a diesel range rover sport.

Firstly it is a straightforward job to empty a rangerover fuel tank, there is a “misfuel” prevention device installed in most newer range rovers, range rover sports and landrovers, this is a little set of mechanisms in the filler neck that detect a petrol nozzle by its sive and activate a little spring loaded yellow flap that closes and stops the fuel tank from being filld further, well thats the theory but in practice it will only acivate it a petrol nozzle is pushed right into it, and it will not activate if the petrol nozzle is put in at a slant, we get called out to these at least once a week much to the surprise of the owners who thought they could not misfuel.

The averidge range rover/landrover driver tends to fill their cars to the top so a misfuel is usualy no half measure.

If you have misfueld you will often phone your dealership, who will most likely ask you to have the car recoverd to them for “extensive repairs” this is normally unnecessary.

We often get called out by rangerover drivers who have used the wrong fuel and their car is in the dealership, and they call us after surfing the net for a while, we are happy to collect your car from the dealership if work has not been started on it, and after we have performed a fuel drain and resupplied you with the correct fuel, you can simply drive away.

Oddly the new freelander is the more complicated to drain out of the bunch, the brand new one has a hard to get to twin tank system and can only be drained by someone who knows what they are doing.

If you have accidently activated the misfuelling yellow flap, there is a re-set device in the boot or glovebox, it looks like a bright yellow pasta fork type thing and is very simple to use, the misfulling mechanism has no “memory” so it doesnt register that it has been activated and can be re-set as many times as you want.
