I have had a very similar experience with mis-fueling, with the exception, the dealer is accusing me of putting unleaded in my BMW 320d (02). Your site contained very useful information as I am currently without a car as the dealer has sent it to a 'specialist' who stripped it apart and told the dealer that the diesel pump and injectors needed replacing at a cost of 3000 ! The only thing is, I have never fuelled it with anything other than diesel and have the receipts to prove it. My last three cars have been diesel and I drive diesel vans for a living, so the chance of making a mistake a very slim as to be negligible. My car had done 75 miles before it broke down on the so call 'mis-fuel', and I had done well over 500 miles since taking delivery of it. I have had the car 3 weeks. Perhaps it is fair to assume that between the mechanic and/or the dealer, they are simply trying it on to see if I can be suckered into shelling out more than I paid for the car. Could the previous owner have misfuelled it in the past ? Is it highly unlikely that even if it was misfuelled, the money spinning parts would not have suffered the damage claimed ?

Hi Christopher, I'm very sorry to hear about your situation. If you have all the receipts to prove that you have only ever put diesel in the vehicle then the only way there could possibly be any petrol in it was if there was a mix-up at the petrol station itself. It is not unheard of for the wrong fuel to be in the underground tanks. One of the things I would check is if anyone else is reporting similar problems after visiting the petrol stations you have used. If no joy doing that I would have the vehicle checked by your own mechanic to see if he agrees with the diagnosis and recommended correction. Running a vehicle can cause the problems reported although it does not happen very often. Was a fuel analysis done and if so, what were the results? Unfortunately it could very well be a case where the previous owner has misfueled the vehicle, filled it up to the top and then sold it on. I have actually had calls from people who had misfuelled their cars and then decided they didn't want to pay for the drain and actually said to me that they would just fill it up and sell it on. To be honest, I would only suspect this if the car was bought with a full or nearly full tank. If this is the case I'm afraid there is probably no way of proving anything and therefore no recourse. I wish you luck. The Fuel Man
