Late last year, I phoned in regarding a 2011 Audi A3 125Kw TDI which I had the misfortune of filling with petrol rather than diesel. The reason was simply a combination of habit and inattention - I was at the same station where I always refuel less than a mile from home. I was at the right pump (the only one with diesel) however did not pay close enough attention to the nozzle I grabbed while talking on the phone. The tank was completely empty before being filled with petrol. After filling, I got in the car, started it and drove home. As I live less than a kilometer from the station, my speed never exceeded 40 km/h (25 mph). As soon as the car started stuttering, I had realized what had happened. Fortunately, I was able to park on the side of the road and turn off the engine before it stopped on it's own. I phoned the Audi dealership and had the car towed there. Once the car arrived, I spoke with one of the mechanics over the phone and he said the would call me the following day to let me know what they would have to do. What they said would have to happen was a complete replacement of all parts in the fuel system (all pumps, hoses, spark plugs, tank, common rail...) and that the total would be close to 8000. I asked if all the parts had been checked and after a very heated discussion I was able to extract from them that they simply do one of three things: 1) if the car had not been started they will replace the fuel 2) if the car had been started, they will replace a fixed set of parts 3) if the car had been driven, they replace the entire fuel system In short, no investigation was performed they were simply working off a formula. It was at this point that I started looking for a second opinion. I live in Finland and, not being an automotive expert, language was somewhat of a barrier. I trolled the internet for information about my particular vehicle but did not find anything specific enough. I found the FuelFixer page and decided to call and, although being out of country, if they would be willing to consult me on what my be possible and provide an opinion on what I was being told by the Audi dealership here. I was given the number of a refueling specialist who was very happy to take my call and answer questions for about 5 or 10 minutes. In short, I was told that what I had been told by the dealer was less than truthful and that in only 3 cases in 2 years had he seen parts need to be replaced (other than the fuel filters). Armed with a bit more information about fuel systems in general, I was able to locate a Bosch dealership in Finland that would flush the fuel system, change the filters and refuel the car. I sent a tow truck to the Audi dealership to pick up the car and have it brought to the Bosch dealer. The next day, I picked up the car and was told that the system had been flushed, filters changed and refueled but nothing more. I drove the car a bit easy for the first week or so and listened for any unusual sounds and try to feel if the car responded differently when pressing the accelerator but nothing seemed out of place. It has been 4 months and I have put on over 5000Km since then. I can't speak for any longer lasting effects but at the time of writing, the car feels as it did prior to the incident. The total damage was around 900 including the towing charges which is a far cry from the 8000 quote by the Audi dealership. The information provided by FuelFixer was as accurate as it was invaluable. Many, many thanks.
