Diesel in a Petrol Sports Bike? Scottish Borders Madness

It’s not quite summer yet but the weather has been so fantastic that a lot of our customers have been out and about enjoying the sun and warmth. One particular middle-aged gentleman up in the Scottish Borders decided to do a bit of touring on his classic Yamaha TDM 850. If you’ve never seen one of these, google a picture – you won’t be disappointed.

Anyway, about halfway through his Sunday afternoon fun-ride he stopped off at a little petrol station in Galashiels to fill up. His delight at the lower price of petrol in the area soon turned to dismay when he realised he was paying for diesel instead!

Fortunately our Sunday-rider was an experienced motorcyclist with many years under his belt as an avid motorbike enthusiast. He knew that putting the wrong fuel, diesel, into a petrol engine would likely create problems for his beloved machine, and decided against trying to start it or top it up with the correct fuel. Stripping down and cleaning out the fuel system on any of these high-performance bikes is not only time-consuming, but also costly. He knew that his only option was to get a fuel drain.

One quick call to us and we had a knight in shining armour barrelling down the A7 to rescue him. Within twenty minutes of arriving we had his pride-and-joy fully drained, cleaned out and ready to roll again.

I called up our engineer to ask how the job went and, as he watched the happy customer ride off with a huge smile on his face he replied that it was the most enjoyable job of the week so far. Not only are the Borders some of the most beautiful and scenic parts of the country, but a Yamaha TDM 850 is an absolute dream of a bike to have anything to do with.

So, if you are out in the Scottish Borders admiring your surroundings and inadvertently put the wrong fuel in your car or bike, give us a call. We love to service the area.
